How GST works in India
GST (Goods and Services Tax) replaced multiple indirect taxes in India on July 1, 2017. It is a destination-based tax applied at every stage of the supply chain, with input tax credit available to avoid cascading taxation.
For small shopkeepers and kirana stores, GST matters most when you cross the registration threshold (₹40 lakh annual turnover for goods) or when you want to claim input credit on purchases. Even if you're below the threshold, understanding how GST applies to your products helps you price correctly and stay compliant.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the current GST rates in India?
India has four main GST slabs: 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%. Essential goods like food grains are at 0-5%, standard goods at 12-18%, and luxury/sin goods at 28%. Some items also attract an additional cess.
What is the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST?
For sales within the same state, GST is split equally between CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST). For inter-state sales, IGST (Integrated GST) applies at the full rate. The total tax amount is the same either way.
How do I calculate GST on my product?
Enter your product price, select the GST rate (5%, 12%, 18%, or 28%), and choose whether the price is GST-inclusive or GST-exclusive. The calculator will show you the net price, GST amount (split into CGST + SGST or IGST), and the total price.
Do I need to register for GST?
GST registration is mandatory if your annual turnover exceeds ₹40 lakh (₹20 lakh for special category states) for goods, or ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh for special category states) for services. Even below these thresholds, voluntary registration allows you to claim input tax credit.
